Incline Village, NV;
The Incline varsity volleyball team stayed undefeated in AA Northern NV league play with a huge 5 game win over the White Pine Bobcats on Saturday afternoon. In a rematch of last years regional semi final game, where the Bobcats ended the Highlanders season, two of the top teams in AA Nevada went back and forth all match until Incline held on for the victory.
“That was a regional tournament type of game right there,” Incline coach Tim Kelly said. “We are so proud of the fight in our girls. They battled all day, up or down, they never stopped competing. It was awesome to watch. They should be very proud of themselves.”
With the win the Highlanders move to 11 – 5 overall and more importantly 4 – 0 in league play. The Bobcats drop to 15 – 2 overall with both losses coming in league play to Incline and Yerington. They are 2 – 2 in league.
White Pine did not make it easy for the host Highlanders. After Incline cruised to a game 1 win, 25 – 15, the Bobcats woke up and took advantage of some Incline miscues to win 25 – 16 in game 2. Game three was beautiful volleyball by both teams. A back and forth battle that had many ties and lead changes, White Pine took control late in the game to take a 24 – 21 lead. The Highlanders didn’t give up though and once again found a way to rally late in a game. Two huge digs by Senior Setter Madeleine Sax and a gigantic ace from Sophomore Olivia Schneider brought the game to a 24 – 24 tie. A sideout from White Pine gave them their 3rd game point but Incline rallied right back at the visitors on a huge kill from Junior middle Chandler Cohn. Cohn finished with 5 kills, 16 digs and 2 blocks. Senior Libero Leslie Medina made two tough serves and Senior middle, Alexis Krolick, had a perfectly timed block and Incline took game three 27 – 25. Medina finished with 10 digs on the day and Krolick had 3 kills and the one block.
Game four was more of the same as both teams didn’t give an inch to their opponent. Another late rally after a 13 – 13 tie for the visiting Bobcats and they held on for a 25 – 19 win to force a deciding game 5 to 15 points.
Game 5 was all Incline early as they jumped out to a 14 – 6 lead on many gorgeous passes from Junior defensive specialist Allysa Fellows. Then Incline decided to make it interesting with some passing and hitting miscues. Those along with White Pine finding a new found energy all of a sudden made the score 14 – 12. Finally, a great pass from Ellyse Kirkland and a great set from Saxe set up the winning kill for the Highlanders from Cohn and they took the 15 – 12 victory.
Incline was once again led by their Senior Tri – Captains; Kirkland, Saxe and Madison Cronk. Kirkland seemed like she was all over the court for the Highlanders as she finished with 12 Kills, 21 digs and 3 blocks. Saxe, the setter in Incline’s 5 – 1 attack, finished with 34 assists and 13 digs. Cronk, who injured her finger in game 3, finished with 8 kills and 7 digs. Sophomore utility player, Schneider, also had a great match with 7 kills and 24 digs.
