Tahoe City, CA;
The Incline Highlanders survived a big time scare on Thursday night as they held on to defeat their cross lake rivals, North Tahoe Lakers, in 5 sets and maintain their hold on second place in AA Northern Nevada.
Incline, 14 – 6 overall and 6 – 1 in league play, dominated for 3 sets but North Tahoe, 4 – 7 overall and 3 – 4 in league, just wouldn’t go away in the 2 other sets.
“I take a gigantic part of the blame for our let down that started in set 2,” first year coach Tim Kelly said. “I went away from the script and changed some things around and we didn’t have the same focus as game 1. I led the girls the wrong way and it almost came back to bite us. North Tahoe is a solid team, Carrie, their coach, does a phenomenal job having them ready. I’m just glad our girls did what they needed to do to get the win.”
The Highlanders definitely did what they needed in sets 1, 3 and 5 where they dominated the Lakers; 25 – 13, 25 – 13 and 15 – 1. The crazy stat is how Incline allowed a total of 27 points in those 3 sets while allowing 25 a piece in sets 2 and 4 where North Tahoe won both by the same score of 25 – 23.
When it was all said and done though, Incline is still one game back of 1st place Yerington and one game up on 3rd place White Pine. They start October break after school tomorrow and they wont return to action until Tuesday Oct. 10 when they will host this same North Tahoe Laker team in the friendly confines of Incline High gymnasium.
